About Fernung Studio
Site-specific murals, painted environments, and decorative surface work by Indianapolis artist Eric Fernung.
Fernung Studio is the creative practice of Eric Fernung, an artist and muralist based in Indianapolis, Indiana, creating site-specific murals and painted environments for residential, commercial, hospitality, historic, and public spaces.
The studio approaches painting as part of the architecture itself. Rather than placing an image onto a wall, each project begins with the place: its proportions, history, light, materials, surroundings, and the people who will experience it.
Eric came to mural painting through photography.
Before working at architectural scale, he studied the world through a lens; people, interiors, landscapes, weathered objects, changing light, and the small details that give a place its particular atmosphere. He earned a B.S. in Photography from Indiana Wesleyan University, developing an early foundation in composition, visual storytelling, and observation.
That way of seeing remains central to his work.
Growing up in rural Indiana surrounded by fields, woods, old houses, animals, seasons, and weathered materials left a lasting imprint on Eric’s visual language.
His work frequently returns to nature, architecture, historical imagery, domestic spaces, folklore, and the possibility that ordinary places can contain something mysterious or mythic.

Eric remains closely involved throughout the process—from research, concept development, and composition through surface preparation, painting, refinement, protection, and final installation. Larger projects may involve trusted assistants while the artistic direction and primary painting remain closely held by the studio.
Materials and finishing systems are selected according to the conditions of each site, including professional interior and exterior paint systems and appropriate protective coatings.
Eric Fernung is an Indianapolis-based artist and the founder of Fernung Studio. He holds a B.S. in Photography from Indiana Wesleyan University and works across mural painting, decorative art, visual storytelling, and site-specific design.
His work ranges from private residential environments to commercial and large-scale exterior commissions, with projects throughout Indiana and select travel beyond the state.
